Grief in Film

During this talk, Dr Jimmy Hay explores representations of the lived experience of grief in contemporary cinema. He considers the extent to which they are successful in offering more nuanced and empathetic portrayals of an experience that is often used more as a plot device when addressed in film.

Jimmy also discusses an ongoing project he is engaged with. By utilising the formal elements of film language in two creative filmmaking projects, it seeks to explore whether it is possible to create genuine empathy and capture the lived experience of grief and the mourning process on film.
